Oakland Police Arresting About 100 Occupy Protesters: Police were in the process of arresting about 300 Occupy protesters for failing to disperse Saturday night, hours after officers used tear gas on a rowdy group of demonstrators who threw rocks and flares at them and tore down fences.

Police Sgt. Christopher Bolton said the arrests came after protesters marched through downtown Oakland a little before 8 p.m. Saturday, with some of them entering a YMCA building.

Meanwhile, about 100 police officers surrounded City Hall while others were swept the inside of the building to see if any protesters broke in.

More help from other police agencies was also on the way, with busloads of Alameda County sheriff’s deputies arriving in the downtown area late Saturday.

The nighttime arrests came after 19 people were taken into custody in Occupy Oakland protests hours earlier.

Police used tear gas and “flash” grenades on the group Saturday afternoon after some demonstrators threw rocks and other objects at them. Police said three officers were hurt, but they released no details. Continue Reading…

Mr. Harris-Moore was arrested in the Bahamas when authorities shot out the motor of a boat he stole. He arrived there after making a daring cross-country dash in stolen boats and cars, stealing a plane in the central state of Indiana and crash-landing it off the Bahamas. Continue Reading…

Pitt May Backtrack On Marriage Pact

Brad Pitt has confirmed that he would “actually like to” marry Angelina Jolie.

Pitt May Backtrack On Marriage Pact: Brad Pitt has confirmed that he would “actually like to” marry Angelina Jolie.

The Hollywood couple had stated that they would not tie the knot until everyone had the right to, including gay couples, but he says they may have to backtrack on that.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pitt stated that making that final commitment means a lot to his family.

“We’d actually like to, and it seems to mean more and more to our kids,” Pitt, 48, shared.

“We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out.”

But when pushed on whether he had actually asked his partner of seven years to be his wife, Pitt was more reticent in his response.

“I’m not going to go any further,” the Best Actor Oscar nominee for Moneyball said.

“[But] it means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me too, to make that kind of commitment.”

Elizabeth Smart

Elizabeth Smart: The young woman at the center of an infamous child abduction case — Elizabeth Smart — will tell her story Thursday in Birmingham to raise money for a nonprofit group that serves the needs of Oakland County’s abused and neglected children.

Smart, who was 14 when she was abducted in 2002 from her Salt Lake City, Utah, bedroom, will speak during the Oakland County CARE House’s annual Circle of Friends benefit, held this year at the Townsend Hotel. The event will benefit CARE House’s advocacy and child abuse prevention programs.

“Circle of Friends is more than just an annual benefit,” Cathy Weissenborn, CARE House’s interim executive director and Board of Trustees president, said in a press release. “It also brings a continued awareness to the needs of so many children in our community who cannot stand up for themselves. Boehner’s State Of The Union Guest List Highlights Keystone Advocates

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R)

Boehner’s State Of The Union Guest List Highlights Keystone  Advocates: House Speaker John Boehner’s guests at tonight’s State of the Union address include proponents of the Keystone XL pipeline that President Obama rejected earlier this month.

Boehner’s decision to invite backers of the controversial $7 billion, 1,700 mile underground oil pipeline is meant to hammer home Republican opposition to Mr. Obama’s decision to block the construction of the trans-national pipeline, which would link the tar sands fields of northern Alberta to oil refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Early look at Mr. Obama’s State of the Union speech:

Republicans say the TransCanada Pipeline would create 20,000 jobs (though that figure is hotly contested) and lessen America’s dependence on foreign oil. They vowed at their annual Republican retreat last week to keep up the pressure on Mr. Obama to approve the pipeline.

Boehner says the president is responsible for “destroying tens of thousands of American jobs and shipping American energy security to the Chinese” by blocking the pipeline, at least temporarily. At a news conference today, he said “The president’s policies have made our economy worse.”

Mr. Obama decided last week to block the pipeline from moving forward, saying there was not enough time for an environmental review of the project by a Congress-enforced deadline. The administration originally planned to put off a decision until after the 2012 elections, but Congress forced his hand in December when Mr. Obama was seeking an extension of the payroll tax cut, setting a short-term deadline for a decision.
